Every person that has every enjoyed sports enough to become a coach knows something about the John Wooden coaching career. John Wooden is a retired American basketball coach, who is also regarded as the greatest college coach in history. John Wooden is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a coach and a player. Wooden won 10 NCAA National Championships while he was at UCLA. This record has yet to be matched.

The John Wooden coaching career started in John's early life when he got his first start in sports in high school. He was not a coach, yet, but his knowledge and skill of the game began there. John Wooden played basketball for Martinsville High School in Indiana, where his skills let the team to the state championships for three consecutive years. After high school, John went to Purdue University, where he was once again very successful, being All-American guard three times, and named All-Big Ten and All-Midwestern. He was given the nickname "The Indiana Rubber Man" for his daring dives on the court. After he graduated from Purdue, he went to Indiana State Teacher's College, earned his Master's Degree and stayed on as athletic director and basketball coach. It is here that the John Wooden coaching career began.

John coached high school teams in Dayton High School in Kentucky for two years. He had a losing record his first year there-a first and only time in the John Wooden coaching career. He then went to South Bend Central High School and coached basketball with a winning record. After college, Wooden played professional sport with the Indianapolis Kautskys, taught, and coached at high schools for a few years before joining the Navy.

Upon return from the Navy, John coached at Indiana State University and acted as athletic director. His team won and was invited to the NAIB National Tournament in Kansas City, an invite John declined because of their policy banning African American players. The next year the rule was changed and John took his team there and went to the finals. John became, that year, the first African-American to play in a post-season intercollegiate basketball tournament. A true measure of success in the John Wooden coaching career came on February 3, 1984 when John Wooden was inducted into the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame.

When John was at UCLA, his team had a record for winning more national championships than any other team. John won many awards for his great work at UCLA such as Henry Iba Award USBWA College Basketball Coach of the Year, Sport's Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Award to name a few. Since 1977, a John R. Wooden Award has been given to one of the four basketball player of the year awards. Any athlete's dream come true would be to have a John Wooden coaching career.

We all have dreams of what we want to do with our lives when we grow up. Not often do we get to act out our life's dreams quite like Gerry Fausts coaching career allowed Gerry to do. Gerry Faust was a football coach at the University of Notre Dame from 1981 to 1985. This is not, however, where the Gerry Fausts Coaching Career got its beginning.

Gerry attended the University of Dayton, where he played football and was a very successful quarterback for the team. He played under the leadership skills of Notre Dame coach Hugh Devore. Although, Gerry received a partial scholarship to Notre Dame and originally really wanted to attend Notre Dame, he ended up attending the University of Dayton.

The Gerry Fausts coaching career began with Gerry's tenure as coach at Moeller High School in Cincinnati. He was very successful with a football program that he built from scratch. His accomplishments included seven unbeaten seasons, four national prep titles, five Ohio state titles and an overall record of 174-17-2.

Faust had made quite a name for himself at this point, so he was hired at Notre Dame. Gerry had always had a lifelong dream to be at Notre Dame and came there along with some of his players from Moeller. Things did not go as hoped for Faust, and he soon realized that Gerry Fausts coaching career would never bee the same again. After the first year in 1981, Notre Dame was voted #1, but this did not last for long and things began going downhill for Fausts.

It is unknown why exactly his coaching and success rate changed, but the team began losing. Although the first year coaching brought success and a winning season, every year after that was almost worse than the year before. His former rapport with his players seemed almost nonexistent. He never managed to win more than seven games in one season, and was never even close to contending for a national title. The fans wanted Gerry Fausts coaching career to end at Notre Dame, with the famous slogan being "Oust Faust". Despite this, he did finish out his five-year contract at Notre Dame.

It was later said that Faust had poor collegiate coaching experience, did not like taking advice and was too hard on the players. He would start the season trying to be best friends with the players and end the season with nothing but drills, drills and more drills and constant criticism. His career highlight there was his appearance in the 1984 Aloha Bowl. When he left Notre Dame, he took a coaching position at the University of Akron, where his record was not much better than at Notre Dame. The Gerry Fausts coaching career ended when he was relieved of his duties and became a fundraiser for the school. Today, he still has a love for Notre Dame, despite his failures as a coach. Gerry was a guest speaker at the 2006 football awards banquet.

Anyone that is a football fan knows about the Mack Brown coaching career, and how it came to be so successful. William Mack Brown, more commonly called Mack Brown, is the head coach of the University of Texas Longhorn football team. Mack Brown took his team to a Rose Bowl victory and a National Championship in 2005. Up through 2006, he helped his team to win 10 or more games for the last six years. This is the best ten-win streak in the history of the NCAA. As great as Mack Brown was the past couple of years, the Mack Brown Coaching Career started long before this.

Mack was born in Cookeville, Tennessee and attended Putnam County High School, where he began playing football, as had his father and grandfather. He attended Vanderbilt University, graduated from Florida State University and started coaching as a student coach when an injury ended his playing career. The Mack Brown coaching career continued when he then became a wide receivers coach first at Memphis state and then at Iowa state. In 1982, his venture was at LSU as a quarterbacks coach.

In 1983, he got his first head coaching job with the Appalachian State, where he led them to a winning record. When he didn't get the head coach job at LSU, he took a position as offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners. One of his quarterbacks here was future Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. The second head coaching position of the Mack Brown coaching career was with Tulane in 1985, where he turned the team around and led them to the Independence Bowl. For his great working coaching at Appalachian State, Tulane and North Carolina, Mack Brown was awarded the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award for "Coach of the Year".

In December 1997, the Mack Brown coaching career took another step forward with his offer to come to Texas and coach for the University of Texas. At first, Mack wanted to stay where he was in North Carolina, but Texas wanted him badly enough so they offered him a lot in salary and benefits until he accepted. Mack Brown has made many career accomplishments in his career. One of the many accomplishments is his having 17 consecutive winning seasons, second only to Bobby Bowden.

In 2005, he was part of the Big 12 Conference Championship and the 2005 NCAA Football National Championship. Brown also had 14 consecutive bowl game appearances. While working at Texas, players under his leadership that won awards are Heisman Trophy (Ricky Williams), Maxwell Award (Ricky Williams and Vince Young), Davey O'Brien Award Winners, Doak Walker Award, 2 Thorpe Award winners and 4 national player of the year honors. The awards and accomplishments of the Mack Brown coaching career go on and on.

Almost every boy in American has played football at some time in his childhood. For some, playing the game is just a pastime, where as for some it is a lifelong love. Many professional football players started playing football as young children and continued playing in high school and into college and finally the pros. Many prefer football coaching as a career. Some football players are injured while playing the game and have to retire. Other athletes just enjoy the concept of coaching the game more than physically playing the game. Often a player will play football until he is ready to retire from the game and then go to football coaching as a career.

There are many reasons why athletes choose football coaching as a career. Many athletes have an excellent knowledge of the game and how to play to win, but can't play the game themselves. These types of people usually make excellent football coaches. Lou Saban had football coaching as a career, but only after he played professional football for a few years. By the time he became a coach, he was knowledgeable enough of the game to make an impact as a coach, no matter what team he went for.

There is more to football coaching then just knowing the game, however. A certain amount of college and education must be completed before a person decides to have football coaching as a career. Sometimes, athletes excel in sports in high school and are granted a sports (or football) scholarship to college. There they are groomed in football even more, and if good enough, can compete for professional football.

Mike Shanahan is an athlete that chose football coaching as a career many years ago. He began playing football in high school, then went on to college at Eastern Illinois University. When a football injury to his kidneys ended his football-playing career, he had to make some life changes. Since he could no longer play the game he loved so much, he chose football coaching as a career. He went through a few different assistant coach and coach positions in the Northern Arizona University and University of Arizona before he was hired on with the NFL, where he is today. As a coach for the Denver Broncos, Mike Shanahan has been very successful. He took his team to two Super bowl championships in 1997 and 1998 as well as leading them to the playoffs year after year. I don't think there's any players on the Denver Broncos team that aren't glad Mike chose football coaching as a career.
