Online Doctorates Now A Reality
15th July 2009
The future of higher education seems to be moving increasingly online, and yet many people are unaware of this shift. There are now more opportunities than ever before for people who wish to attain a higher degree to find ways to do so from the comfort of their own homes. Distance learning and correspondence options have been offered through most universities for some time now, however, it is only in the last decade with higher internet speeds and increased functionality of the web that it has become viable for entire programs to be offered over the internet. These courses start at undergraduate and college level courses, for instance, there are online nursing colleges which will allow someone to train up to the point of being ready to get their license to practice as an RN, and go all the way to the doctoral level.
With so many people having trouble holding onto their jobs recently, this opportunity to go back to school and learn a new profession is something that many people value. For example, becoming an RN might be a very large step up for someone who has only been able to work low paying jobs with their high school or partial post-secondary education, and becoming an RN could mean job security and an assured future for that person.
On the other hand, some people want to go back to school for a variety of other reasons. It is essentially common knowledge that people with higher degrees earn more money, and so someone with an undergraduate degree in a subject like history might decide to return via online education and achieve a masters, or even take an online PhD history program. A PhD holder on average earns over a million dollars more over the course of a career, something you can be sure is weighing on the minds of many of those who decide to pursue a doctorate degree.
Also available is something like an online PhD in education. This would be very important for someone looking for career advancement opportunities. Many of these programs are in specialized tracks and are designed to create ideal employees for positions at the higher levels of educational administration and management. For example, there are courses in curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, and educational technology which would each provide you for a different type of post within the education industry. There are examples of all these educational programs available through distance learning through the University of Phoenix.
