    Seeking out role models

    30th July 2008

It may be nice to get statistics about jobs that you are interested in, but the real scoop comes from people who have worked those jobs for the last few years. If you are thinking of planning a career change, look around to the people who inspire you. They can be your role models. Most people are flattered to be asked how they achieved their career success. Some will be more than happy to share their secrets. Others might warn you away from a particular career, understanding the pressures of the marketplace that may not be obvious through just statistical research.

Finding someone you can talk to face-to-face who has worked the job you want is an excellent way to do research on a career. Even if you are planning on starting your own business, you will want to seek out entrepreneurs who have made a go of their businesses. Always look for people who shine and who can inspire you to follow in their footsteps. If you can't find someone like that, you can always turn to a career coach to help you sort out the different career options available to you.
